Description:

The Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a web browser anywhere in the world! This compact, self-contained unit lets you keep track of your home, your kids, your workplace -- whatever's important to you. Unlike standard "web cams" that require an attached PC, the Internet Video Camera contains its own web server, so it can connect directly to a network, either over Wireless-G (802.11g) networking, or over 10/100 Ethernet cable. The advanced MPEG-4 video compression produces a high-quality, high-framerate, up to 320x240 video stream. The Compact Internet Video Camera's unique form-factor and wireless connectivity allows you to mount it on a wall nearly anywhere, or slip it into its included stand for desktop use. Once it's connected to your home network, you can "see what it sees" from any Windows-based PC in the house, while the video stream is secured from the outside world, hidden behind your Router. If you want the video to be visible from outside your home network, you can open an appropriate port on the Router, and then create password protected accounts to manage access to the camera, or leave it wide open for the world to see. The SoloLink domain service (trial sign-up included) lets you access your camera using an easy-to-remember "name", even if your home Internet connection uses a dynamic IP address. You can also turn on Security Mode, which tells the camera to send a message with a short video attached to up to three email addresses whenever it detects motion in its field of view. You can then log onto the live video stream if the situation warrants. The included Viewer & Recorder utility lets you record the audio/video stream to your local hard drive, "live" or on a predetermined schedule.

Features:

Sends high-quality live video to your network wirelessly -- viewable from Windows PCs anywhere

Built-in stand-alone web server, no PC necessary

Security Mode automatically sends email alerts with video clips upon motion detection

Supports up to four simultaneous remote users

4not bad BUT....Mar 04, 2010
the cam isnt too bad. when its finally programmed, its pretty dependable.

HOWEVER

thefact that there is an active x control with a certificate expired un july of 09, and STILL no fix from linksys for something easy to fix puts into question their WHOLE support structure. that should have been set to expire in 2015, or some time when g is no longer used(we have a b from dlink, but went with the linksys cause it was g wireless). then we removed g for pci compliance, and hardwired it. now, we cant use the newer cam JUST because of an expired certificate - unless i drill down the security of the workstation to non-existant for active x - something i refuse to do at a company. all in all, the cam was ok for business uses, but, as linksys hasnt updated the certificate, i will NOT be buying any linksys cams - im still deciding if this is bothering me enough to stop me from buying the rest of their line of hardware. and yes, i do this stuff for a living.

1Works only with windowsFeb 25, 2010
It was given to me as gift.

The title in this review might be a little bit misleading. You can use MAC or LINUX to get the video stream from this camera; however, you have to figure out your own recording solution. The setup software and recording works with only Windows. If you use something else, you are on your own. I give 1 star rating because of this.

To be fair, Linksys printed on the box that this product only works with Windows.

1A piece of junkDec 31, 2009
Like many others I have always thought of Linksys as a reputable company with a decent product for the cost. This is definately not the case with the Linksys Compact Wireless-G Internet Video Camera I have owned this camera for a while now and after many wasted hours of trying to get it to work reliably I have given up. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Even when it does work the picture is fuzzy and forget about getting a usable picture in any type of low light environment. Spend a bit more and get a better quality product. You will be wasting your money with this one.

1Difficult to use, poor qualityDec 23, 2009
We used this camera a few times, but it's not really wireless (needs to be plugged into a router) and it does not work well for motion detection.

It is very difficult to set up.

It has poor picture quality.

2Poor video quality and features don't workSep 21, 2009
I got this because it is supposed to be able to e-mail you if it detects motion. Unfortunately for me, not only will it not e-mail me. it doesn't detect motion, and doesn't save video even if I set it to record. All in all a waste of time.

The only reason it doesn't get one star is the Linksys tech support (chat online). They were accessible and responsive. But they say I should return the camera at my cost, and they will ship me a new one by ground. Given that to do that will cost me more than a replacement from a different manufacturer (I'm not in the US) I won't bother.

Edit: Don't bother to get this unless your subject is always in bright light. Dim light performance is lousy.
