Found the book quite thorough and containing numerous examples to learn the subject matter. Highly recommended.

3Only for a first-time programmerJan 25, 2010
It kind of drags, the projects are very basic, almost too basic for even a first timer. It lost my interest about a third of the way through. I can understand starting off slow, but he didn't ever shift a gear. You go through the same steps over and over. It did start off pretty good but...I guess that I was expecting some larger projects. It was neat creating .exe programs, however.
I read the reviews before I purchased it and it was the #1 book in the field, I think. I have taken a couple programming classes so I guess I should have gone for something with a little more meat.

3GREAT for BEGINNERS - but not for an experienced developer trying to get up to speed.Jan 05, 2010
If you are a beginning developer, then - this is the book for you! The book will truly get you excited about programming in general, and Visual Basic in particular! HOWEVER, if you are an experienced developer who is just trying to get up to speed tih VS 2008, then go somewhere else. The skills taught are extremely elementary. And the whole book is RIDDLED with HORRIBLE programming practices! BEGINNING PROGRAMMER; NEVER, NEVER, NEVER close a form (or application) by issuing the END command - this should NEVER be used! And, for an experienced developer - there is just way too much reference to VB6 - the way things WERE. I didn't buy it to migrate from VB6 to VB08 - I bought it, as an experienced developer with strong VB2003 and 2005 experience - to get up to speed with VB2008. AND - there are numerous examples within the book where "sloppy" programming practices are interjected, such as: assigning an integer value to a string property. NOT GOOD! The first programming book that I ever read - many, many, many years ago - was a book by David Lein. IT WAS WONDERFUL! Because he taught good programming practices throughout the entire book. I believe, however, that this author of Step-by-Step for Visual Basic 2008 - just got basically "lazy", as he apparently "reworked" previous editions of his book to VB2008. But if you are a beginning programmer - with absolutely NO programming experience - this book will get you EXCITED - and really get you anxious to further explore the language and the possibilities - so, beginning programmers - go for it!

5Great Reference and BookDec 13, 2009
I love this book. I usually do not sit down and just read a programming book, but this one is great, it catches you and does not let go. When reading this book you feel like you are talking to the author, because it is written that good. I am pretty aware of programming and techniques, and yet this book grabs me from the basics to the more advance topics. Highly recommend for reference and new users. To let you know it does not tell you but it focuses on using Visual Studio 2008 Professional, which I have, but if you do not Visual Studio BASIC 2008 express will work to!

3Still learningNov 01, 2009
I bought the book hoping for a good reference manual. However, when I try to look things up in the index, I don't have much luck finding the topics I'm looking for. That being said, I am going to try to use it as a text book and go through the lessons as it is designed. I am through chapter 2, and it did help me solve a problem that I was having with a program.
